Mouthwash: Friend or Foe?
Over half of American adults have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and bone supporting the teeth, according to the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss. Research has also shown that periodontal disease is associated with other chronic inflammatory diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Even preterm, low-weight babies have been linked to this disease. Mouthwash can aid in the fight, however, it is not a substitute for proper brushing and flossing.
