Oh no! Dental Emergency!
Dental accidents don’t respect office hours. The best solution to any dental problem is to visit us; but which problems are really emergencies? Here is a short list of which dental issues can wait for the next day, and which ones you really need to pay attention to.
Toothache: They are annoying, but not dangerous. If you have a toothache outside of office hours, here are a couple natural solutions you can try in addition to taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Placing a whole clove inside your cheek by the hurting tooth can encourage the nerve to calm down. Rinsing with warm salt water can also help relieve the pain temporarily.
Missing Filling: Sometimes fillings can break or become dislodged by hard food. When this happens, the rest of the tooth becomes prone to breakage. Be careful to chew on the other side of your mouth and rinse gently to keep the area clean. Then come see us the next day to get it repaired.
Dental Infection: For the most part, toothaches are annoying and painful, but not generally dangerous. An abscess or other dental infection is the exception! If you wake up with a swollen jaw or are having severe pain, get yourself to an emergency health care provider then visit us as soon as you can!
Missing Tooth: If you knock a tooth out, DON’T WAIT! If at all possible, place the tooth in a cup of cow's milk, as this will help the root survive. You only have about 30 minutes to get yourself and the tooth (don’t touch the root!) to a dentist (if we’re closed, ANY dentist!) in hopes of getting it re-attached.
